Magazinska klet – Tkalciceva 54 – New gastronomic destination in the center of Zagreb

Recently, the students Ines and Karla proposed a “genius business idea” to me. Namely, they said that as a well-known Gastro Snob, I could review student canteens. What little hair was left on my head I lost the moment I heard the word canteen. I said to them: “Are you crazy? I just need word to spread around town that the Dear Leader Joe eats in student canteens and rumors will start – He’s failed, he’s just pretending to be successful, he’s average Joe…” Once a man listened to a woman in Paradise and we all know how it ended.

How a new restaurant opened in the city center, to be exact Magazinska klet at Tkalciceva street 54, I suggested we go there for a proper lunch, and along the way I also invited Polina, aka the biggest star of the TV show ”The Bachelor” to join us. Where there are openings, there is also Dear Leader Joe.

Gone are the days when grill places were old shacks on the edge of town with cheap plastic chairs. The space inside is beautifully decorated, but since it was a nice day, we decided to sit on the terrace. Let all passers-by in Tkalciceva see how the Dear Leader Joe lives 🙂

Good beers go great with a good charcoal grill, but when I heard they had De Gotho Grasevina from the Kutjevo winery, I had to order a bottle of wine that recently won the “Best of Show Croatia White” award for the best rated white wine in Croatia at the “Mundus Vini Spring Tasting 2025” international competition in Neustadt, Germany.

Our Polina was late because she went to the Magazinska klet in another location. I forgot that I was supposed to send her the instructions in Cyrillic. I welcomed her with a glass of wine and said in fluent Russian: “У мистера Совершенства нет волос” or in translation: “Mr. Perfect has no hair!”

She laughed like Putin and let me know that she was looking for a man with hair or at least a good wig.

I told her: “If hair was good, even Vin Diesel would have it :)”

We started with a mixed cold plate. The hot bread melted in the mouth like Croatia’s advantage against France football team in Paris, but this bread didn’t leave a bitter taste like a defeat in the League of Nations. It’s not the bread that Ines and Karla eat in the student cafeteria and for which you need a gun certificate because it’s so hard. Hot as an apartment on Dalmatian coast without air conditioning, and soft as silk, it melted in the mouth like Albanian ice cream on a sunny day.

While waiting for the next course, we asked the friendly waiter to take a photo of us with the star of the TV show “The Bachelor”

We continued in a revue tone. Gourmet hamburger steak – Ground beef with bacon, cheese, onion and hot pepper, grilled (350g) – 11.20 euros

Đevrek – Spicy minced beef with bacon, cheese and hot pepper in the form of a wreath with cream (350g) – 12.00 euros

Gourmet chicken skewers – Chicken stuffed with cheese and garlic, wrapped in bacon and grilled (400g) – 13.00 euros

Meat rhapsody by Magazinska klet. If there is a God of vegetables, we will burn in hell 🙂

Ines had a smile on her face like Bill Gates when he realized he wouldn’t end up in prison for hanging out with Jeffrey Epstein.

I told Polina: “Maybe the bachelor is not perfect, but this meat platter is :)”

Of course, we didn’t manage to eat everything after everything we had already eaten, so Ines and Karla asked the friendly waiter to wrap up the rest of their food for home.  It’s hard to be a student 🙂

I said: “This is a meat dessert, but I need something sweet. Lunch without cake is like a taxi driver without a chessboard.” With every bite I felt like heart attack is knocking on my door 🙂

Even the self-deprecating Karla had nothing against cake. It was as if her gaze was saying: “Let them eat cake.”

Zagreb residents may not be thrilled with the new Zagreb logo, but they will certainly be thrilled with the new restaurant of the iconic Magazinska klet at Tkalciceva 54. The city center has a new place for lovers of good grill, but Magazinska klet is much more than that. In addition to top-notch service, they also have super affordable and delicious daily specials from 7 to 12 euros, pizzas, and you can also order roasted veal under the bell, pasta and numerous other delicacies. From Tuesday to Sunday, you can enjoy food and live music at Magazinska klet from 7 pm.

It is interesting that in the basement they have another large and well-decorated room that you can rent for birthdays, business parties, etc. I will organize at this very location on 15.4. the biggest business networking party in Croatia aka IBMC – International Business Meetup Club party. Guests will be entertained by Boris Rogoznica, and if he drinks enough, maybe Dear Leader Joe will play too.
